From the borders of the Andes Mountains to the jungle in south Buenos Aires, “It’s make… or break” in this new Dicing with Death, where we train on the roads of extreme Argentina. From lorry drivers in high altitude, approaching summits and braving precipices, to countryside doctors forced to walk for hours, covering more than 5000 metres, to visit patients, to death-deceiving Gauchos competing in corral arena rodeos, they all show a quiet courage and an impenetrable resourcefulness. We will never forget Pablo the farmer, who crosses the rainy-season lagoons on his Mad Max lorry, half bus half tractor, just to deliver milk to his farm.

I wanted to follow up Timelapse of the Future with a more optimistic perspective of human life and our place in the history of the universe. We really do live in a privileged moment and we have a remarkable opportunity to shape the future. Finding alien life will contextualize our own existence, and open our eyes to what else nature has dreamt up beyond our ourselves, potentially bestowing huge breakthroughs in science, technology, and philosophy.

Caesar marschiert im 1. Jahrhundert vor Christus in Gallien ein. Sein Ziel: die Unterwerfung aller keltischen Stämme. Doch Vercingetorix gelingt es, die gallischen Stämme gegen Rom zu einen.
Sieben Jahre dauert Roms Kampf um Gallien. Die letzte große Schlacht wird 52 vor Christus von Caesar und seinen Truppen geschlagen, vor der Stadt Alesia. Die Festnahme des Keltenfürsten Vercingetorix besiegelt das Schicksal der freien Kelten auf dem Kontinent. Im Jahr 58 vor Christus wendet sich der Volksstamm der Helvetier an den Befehlshaber der römischen Provinz Gallia Narbonensis. Sie wollen von ihm die Erlaubnis, durch dessen Herrschaftsgebiet zu ziehen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt konnte noch keiner ahnen, dass dies der Anfang vom Ende der keltischen Unabhängigkeit auf dem Kontinent sein würde. Sieben Jahre zieht sich der anschließende «bello gallico», der «Gallische Krieg» hin, in dessen Verlauf Caesar einen Keltenstamm nach dem anderen unterwirft. Doch im Jahr 52 vor Christus gelingt es dem Arvernerfürsten Vercingetorix, die Kelten gegen Rom zu einen. Für eine kurze Zeit sieht es so aus, als hätten die Kelten Erfolg. Doch die Hoffnung, dass ihre Kultur überleben könnte, die in Deutschland so beeindruckende Zeugnisse wie das Grab des Fürsten von Hochdorf oder die Großsiedlung in Manching hervorgebracht hat, erfüllt sich nicht. Die Kelten, von denen überliefert ist, dass sie ihre Gegner den Göttern opfern, finden in Caesar einen unerbittlichen Gegner. Als sich Vercingetorix mit seinen Kriegern in der Festung Alesia verschanzt, schließt Caesar sie mit umfangreichen Belagerungswerken ein. Als nach 30 Tagen die Nahrungsmittel ausgehen, sendet der Kelte Frauen, Kinder und Alte aus der Stadt. Doch Caesar lässt die Familien seines Feindes zwischen den Fronten verhungern. Die anschließende Schlacht, bei der sich das Kriegsglück ständig wendet, dauert vier Tage. Erst dann gelingt es den Römern, die Kelten zu schlagen. Vercingetorix zieht sich in die Stadt zurück und ergibt sich am darauffolgenden Tag. Damit ist der Aufstand beendet und ganz Gallien befriedet — zumindest bis an den Rhein.

In northern Benin, each year from October to January, DRAMANE and ZACHARI, drivers of rattling trucks survive only to the rhythm of the cotton harvest. Like them, hundreds of drivers are trying to profit from this white gold which represents nearly 40% of BENINs exports to rich countries. But in this very poor country, the cultivation of cotton dramatically impoverishes the soils of the countryside… Because the immaculate flower requires astronomical quantities of water to grow… water which in Benin is sorely lacking for the inhabitants who walk for kilometers on foot to find some… In this painful context, ZACHARI fights to load the meager cotton crops with a rolling wreck… DRAMAN he is seven days a week stuck behind the wheel of a huge truck, a «TITAN». He rushes to the ground, ignoring the pedestrians to deliver the port of COTONOU as quickly as possible. Even if his meager salary forces him to live on a small business, he is not the most miserable like those they meet on the road: The farmers and their children who work only to survive, the women who break stones under the blazing sun or the dockworkers who are paid twenty cents to carry a 200 kilogram bale of cotton.
