1924 год. В маленький городок Чуйск на границе с Китаем возвращается из Харбина бывший золотопромышленник Астахов, сбежавший во время революции. Сопровождает его чекист Павел Самсонов. По договоренности с новыми властями, Астахов должен указать, где было спрятано все его золото, при этом 25 процентов он оставляет себе, а остальное отдает государству.
Операцией руководит начальник местной милиции Зимин — бывший жандарм, присягнувший на верность Стране Советов. Правда, мало кто знает, что на самом деле Астахов приехал не столько за золотом, сколько за дочерью Машей, с которой ему пришлось расстаться семь лет назад из-за вынужденного отъезда.
Астахов показывает тайник, и мешки складируют в хранилище бывшего банка. Однако ночью драгоценный металл бесследно исчезает! Для поиска пропавшего золота из Москвы прибывает чекист Борцевич…
