В Петербурге князь попадает в дом своей дальней родственницы — генеральши Епанчиной, знакомится с ее мужем, их дочерьми, а также секретарем генерала Ганей Иволгиным. Случайно увиденный на столе у генерала портрет Настасьи Филипповны производит на князя большое впечатление…
