The world is home to a plethora of fascinating ancient ruins, from crumbling cities to temples that have withstood the test of time. Many of these ancient societies were incredibly innovative and forward thinking. Just take a look at their meticulous city planning and incredible feats of engineering; some of which we are yet to fully understand. Some of the most captivating ancient ruins are full of thousand-year-old mysteries that will boggle even the most curious of minds.

Der Westwall: eine befestigte Grenze zur Vorbereitung eines Krieges. Mehr als 600 Kilometer zog er sich vom südlichen Oberrhein durch die Eifel bis zum Niederrhein. Entstanden vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, prägt der Westwall die Landschaft und die Bewohner der Gegend bis heute.

Mauern, Bunker, Panzergräben: Die «Siegfried Line»
Rund eine halbe Million Menschen waren am größten Bauwerk der Nationalsozialisten beteiligt. Mit 22.000 Bunkern zieht sich der Westwall entlang des Oberrheins, durch die Wälder von Pfalz und Eifel, mit MG-Nestern im Pfälzerwald, Panzergräben und Mauern durch die Eifel. Am Ende des Krieges erlebten die Amerikaner an der «Siegfried Line», wie sie den Westwall nannten, eine der verlustreichsten Schlachten ihrer Geschichte.

Das grüne Band heute
Entstanden im Zweiten Weltkrieg, prägt der Westwall die Landschaft bis heute. Luftaufnahmen zeigen die einstige Grenze als grünes Band. Stählerne Panzerkuppeln haben auf dem Gelände eines Kindergartens Platz gefunden, aus einem See ragen Bunkerreste.

Geschichts-Denkmal in neuem Licht
Der Film zeigt bisher nicht gesendete Originalaufnahmen vom Bau des Westwalls aus den Jahren 1937 bis 1940. Zeitzeugen erzählen, wie sie den Westwall erlebt haben. Darunter der ehemalige rheinland-pfälzische Ministerpräsident Kurt Beck. Ingenieure und Historiker ordnen ein.

Un misterio envuelve a la famosa pintura de Leonardo da Vinci «La última cena.» Sólo el 20 por ciento de la obra original se aprecia hoy en día. Al estilo de una novela de suspenso, el reportaje intenta reconstruir cómo se veía en origen el mural.

Leonardo da Vinci, artista y genio universal del Renacimiento. En mayo se cumple el quinto centenario de su muerte. Creó obras mundialmente famosas, incluido el fresco «La última cena.» El mural se encuentra en su ubicación original, en el refectorio del antiguo convento dominico de Santa Maria delle Grazie de Milán. Esta pintura, de 4,60 metros de altura y 8,80 metros de ancho, fue restaurada durante 19 años. Durante los trabajos, los científicos descubrieron que hoy sólo puede apreciarse el 20 por ciento del original. Entonces, ¿qué aspecto tenía el original, al que rodean tantas leyendas? La búsqueda de pistas conduce también a la pequeña abadía de Tongerlo en Bélgica, donde se descubrió una misteriosa copia muy antigua de la obra de Leonardo da Vinci. Esta pintura sobre lienzo podría ser una obra encargada para el rey francés Luis XII llevada a cabo por el taller da Vinci. Esto acerca a los científicos un poco a la verdad.
