Xaver Varnus plays Toccata and Fugue in D minor (edited by Mendelssohn) on the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom. Recorded live on the Opening Night of the «Berliner Internationaler Orgelsommer 2013».

At the time of its dedication in 1905, the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom was the largest in Germany, with its 7269 pipes and 113 registers, distributed across four manuals and pedals. The court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer, from Frankfurt on the Oder, created an instrument that embodied the newest technical and musical developments of German organ building at the time. In that way, the organ met the high expectations of both the organ builder and his client: in the Protestant Cathedral of the capital city, there was to be a monumental, modern, and in every way extraordinary instrument of the highest quality. The organ of the Cathedral of Berlin represents the highpoint of Sauer’s career. At the same time, it marks the end of the long development of Romantic orchestral organs, whose sound corresponds to the characteristic sound of a symphonic orchestra of that period. Today, the organ in the Cathedral of Berlin is the largest late-Romantic pneumatic action organ in the world that has survived in its original condition.

Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. Xaver Varnus has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bachs Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis, released by Sony BMG in 2007, is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin, Germany. «Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould» (The Globe

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach

Artists: Elena Barshai (organ)

Like many of his colleagues J.S. Bach frequently borrowed from himself and paid tribute to other composers by transcribing their works for other instruments, For example his oeuvre for organ includes transcriptions of some instrumental concertos based on work of composers like Vivaldi.

These release contains transcriptions of both Bach’s own concertos for solo keyboard and of instrumental concertos by Vivaldi. These works are certainly enhanced by the sonorities of the organ.

Played by the Russian organist Elena Barshai on the Silbermann organ of Arlesheim Cathedral and the Metzler organ of the Church of St. Clara, Basle (both in Switzerland).

Also included is an arrangement for two organs – both played by Barshai — of Bach’s Concerto for four harpsichords (which again is based on a concerto for four violins by Vivaldi).

Bach - Motet Komm, Jesu, komm... BWV 229 - MacLeod | Netherlands Bach Society

Komm, Jesu, komm, mein Leib ist müde, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, used to be known amongst singers from Leipzig as ‘Der saure Weg’, after the most difficult phrase in the piece. The path to its origin is a straighter one, as although we still do not know precisely for whom Bach wrote this piece, it is anyway clear that he composed it himself. Moreover, we can presume that it is a funeral or memorial motet.

Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 14th 2016 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

Franz Schubert String Quintet in C Major, D. 956

Played by The Borodin Quartet With Alexander Buzlov (cello) — The Quintet was to be Schubert’s last completed chamber work. Just a few weeks after having completed the Quintet, Schubert died at three o’clock in the afternoon on November 19, 1828. It is widely believed to be among the handful of greatest chamber works ever composed.

The Borodin Quartet was formed in 1945 by four students from the Moscow Conservatory. Calling itself the Moscow Philharmonic Quartet, the group changed its name to Borodin Quartet ten years later and remains one of the very few existing established chamber ensembles with uninterrupted longevity. The current members of the Quartet are Ruben Aharonian, Sergei Lomovsky, Igor Naidin and Vladimir Balshin.
